Courageous Conversations: Social Media and Body Image

"I Don't Need People to Tell Me I'm Pretty on Social Media:" A Qualitative Study of Social Media and Body Image in Early Adolescent Girls

On November 30 from 6:30 - 7:30pm, researchers from VCU will present results of the focus group study conducted in Spring 2016 with OHS 7th and 8th graders on social media use and how students perceived it impacted their body image.

Blair Burnette, M.S. (VCU Counseling Psychology Doctoral Candidate) and Suzanne Mazzeo, Ph.D. (VCU Professor, Director of Counseling Psychology), who conducted the research, will highlight the importance of parental involvement and the supportive school environment in promoting healthy behavior on social media and fostering self-acceptance and confidence. Researchers welcome questions and dialogue about how to approach social media use in this age group.

This is an OHS + 1 event--members of the Orchard House Community are encouraged to bring a friend with them.
