Office of Diversity

Governing every decision concerning diversity at Orchard House are the following goals:

  • Diversity is mission driven.
  • We will create a learning community where diversity, in all of its multiplicity, is valued and respected by our students, faculty and staff, and parents.
  • In our community, we recognize the NAIS Big 8. However, we extend and expand the Big 8 to look comprehensively at experience, point of view, and voice as critical to the moral and intellectual life of the school.
  • We will celebrate diversity in every aspect of our school.
  • We will ask our community to consider a variety of ways to solve problems, reflect on different points of view, and immerse themselves in the context.
  • Looking at local and national programs as guides to the ever-changing backdrop of global diversity, we will continue to create new initiatives as we expand our community. We will also explore ways to develop further our current programming and outreach in order to strengthen current diversity initiatives.
  • Using diversity, Orchard House will continue to recognize the opportunities to explore and learn about the complex world in which we live.

In order to further the school’s diversity goals, the Office of Diversity:

  • Serves as a resource to parents, students, and staff
  • Consults with administration and staff on how best to serve a diverse population
  • Facilitates community dialogue
  • Mediates racial and cultural misperceptions
  • Counsels and mentors students
  • Assists in the development of a multicultural curriculum
  • Provides diversity and mediation training for faculty and students
  • Represents Orchard House regionally

Purpose of RED Group:

RED Group (Respecting Everyone’s Differences) is a student group whose members use their personal and collective voice to raise awareness of the diversity, varying perspectives, and inequities within their communities.
