Educational Programs
At Orchard House, the faculty has drawn on scholarly research and professional experience to create an academic program that both inspires and challenges middle school girls. Given that many developmental changes accompany adolescence, we take a measured, four-year approach to sharing knowledge, developing skills, and nurturing intellectual curiosity.
Math and science are given as much prominence as the arts and humanities, so that students gain a well-rounded education and want to pursue a wide range of subjects at future schools. The girls are also encouraged to make connections among content areas, to explore specific interests in greater detail, to put what they learn in global context, and to become adept at writing and research. Finally, to achieve meaningful learning and bolster confidence, teachers structure their classes so that the students actively engage in their own education.
Whether through group collaborations, class discussions, or individual presentations, the curriculum at Orchard House is designed to enhance motivation, retention, and understanding. By the time of graduation, the girls are not only proficient in a number of subjects, but also have a joy of learning and want to participate in the classroom.
We are pleased to report that Orchard House School was fully accredited by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools in 2007-2008.
