About Orchard House

girls dancingOur mission is to inspire and to educate middle school girls and to serve as a resource for others.

Adolescent girls, during grades five through eight, are entering one of the most powerful, profound, and influential stages of human development, beginning with identity formation as its chief developmental task. Rapid physical growth and the shift from concrete thinking to abstract reasoning also take shape during this transformative time.

We believe adolescence lays the foundation for a lifelong sense of self. We also believe that a single sex environment allows girls to embrace a positive, authentic identity, a passion for learning, greater access to math, science, and technology, and further opportunities for leadership.

Our work is accomplished in partnership with Orchard House families, the learning community, and the larger place we call home in Richmond's Fan District. The essence of an Orchard House education is the development of each girl's personal authority and consciousness so that she lives and contributes to the world with confidence, joy, faith, and courage.
